The drive towards legalizing marijuana in the U.S. has overshadowed the prevalence of cannibis use in Europe.

The reality is that Europeans are smoking a lot. In some European countries, use prevalence among all adults in surveys of the general popoulation exceeds 30%.  All the data comes from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction.

No European Union (E.U.) country has completely legalized marijuana. In 2001, Portugal became the first E.U. country to decriminalize use of marijuana (personal) – though cultivation and the sale of marijuana is still criminal even if the crop is intended for personal use.

Italy may become the next European country and the second in the world after Uruguay to legalize cannabis, Currently, possession is prohibited but not for personal use and in small quantities.
